The peaceful early history of the region ends with a white hand rising from the sea, symbol of the destruction of Native American life by white settlers. title Campesinodescription Painting depicts a farmworker bending over amid rows of sprouted greens. His hat and position obscure his face and he holds a short hoe in one hand and a plant in the other. "Salvador Torres gave a lecture on the CARA exhibition and the working conditions of our farm work. Salvador Torres' past as a farm worker used then what was called "El Cortito" the short handled hoe to thin cotton or lettuce young plant rows making it possible for the crop to grow well instead of crowded rows of plants sapping energy from each other, the hoe work separated them by eliminating or "thinning" the row. This was back breaking until the United Farm Workers Union, led by Chavez had "El Cortito" outlawed. El "Campesino" is a good example to show the public that is unaware of our struggles to improve our living conditions, especially the farm workers dilemma."
