Annotation
The print depicts a single female figure with bright green skin and orange and yellow highlights. The background is composed of shades of blue with purple brushstrokes. The sunlight orange blush and deep teal hues bring contrast between cold and warm tones, which center the focus around the figure.
Margaret Garcia chose bright colors to display youthfulness and contrast with the typically muted neutral colors in realistic self-portraits. This monoprint was created through an experimental combination of photo emulsion and painting in which ink was applied directly onto the screen during printing. The new technique allows for a more painterly effect, compared to the typically rigid monoprint images. "Red Bitch" was also created with this experimental technique while collaborating with masterprinter Stephen Grace and artist Frank Romero. (Author: Lyra Alonso)
