Annotation
Part of a suite of images devoted to the punk music scene, the print captures the alternative fashion and culture of late 1990s to early 2000s. According to Saldamando, Mary Jane shoes were a staple during her youth. Shoes designed with a wide strap and chunky soles and heels are named Mary Janes for a character in the early twentieth century Buster Brown cartoon-strip. Punk youth selected Mary Janes to signal their reclamation of vintage fashions, retrograde styles, and countercultural values (Author: Karen Mary Davalos with Genesis Maravilla)
