Description
"[A] figure in starting runner's position on top of a blue electrical pole. Red background with multicolor transparent stars, orange plus and minus signs on lower left and right of image--eye with a circle on top of pole..." "Man awaits not knowing for his AIDS test results, not knowing what the outcome will be. He feels the watchful eye of everyone around him. He's in a situation from which he can't run away from. The sky becomes his blood stream and the stars he white cells, some are fading away as they are killed by the virus. The electrical pole represents the similarity of the positive and negative energies that flow in our bodies." M. Reyes.

Annotation
"Tension" is a vibrant and colorful piece that depicts a man waiting for the result of an AIDS diagnostic test. The subject is seen teetering on top of a tension wire pole, balancing between a plus and minus symbol, demonstrating the potential positive or negative outcome. A "Seeing Eye" in the center characterizes the fear of being judged. Reyes’s inspiration for the visuals in this piece, and specifically the use of tension wires, comes from a recurring nightmare he had for five years following an electrical accident. Reyes dreamed he was able to fly but was unable to go past a set of tension wires. The nightmare finally disappeared once Reyes "consciously decided to overcome the tension wires." Reyes created “Tension” using a 12-color separation printing technique, and mixing elements of his photography with a saturated palette. (Author: Ivy Broder)
